Marcus, the founder of a zine called Jocks & Nerds had come in to speak to us about experience in running a zine business. Jocks & Nerds was a cultural, lifestyle magazine targeted at a specific male audience, generally focusing on fashion, music, films, arts, sports and travel. This magazine was generally written in a very colloquial tone in the hopes of sounding engaging and honest to their readers, which was used mostly as their USP. “Fundamentally the magazine was a celebration of a certain type of character – ambitious, creative, inquisitive, and independent – and the magazine focused on those people, famous or otherwise, who we felt expressed those values.” Then utilising our favourite photos from one holiday project, we had to make a DIY mock-up of a zine similar to Marcus’. We were taught to make a zine out of A3 paper, and to use a cut and paste method to create these zines to emulate Marcus’ magazine in our own style.
